  • Mouse-eared hawkweed

    For years I’ve been mislabeling this little flower a dandelion. Why? Because I wasn’t paying close attention to the differences in shape. This lovely weed has squarish petals, compared with the dandelion’s, which are thinner. I apologize, little weed. My bad.

  • Mountain laurel

    This is the first year I’ve seen this tree bloom. It’s almost against the pilings under the old factory. it grows beside the white great laurel I’ve photographed for a few seasons.

  • A stump

    This looks like an old stump by the river and right now it is only that. Last spring I was lucky to see a black capped chickadee moving into this stump. I’m still hoping it will become the site of a bird’s nest.

  • Multiflora rose

    Two small patches of flowers behind an old building. When I see flowers in an abandoned area I admire their toughness in this careless world.

  • Common reed

    Found a nice patch of reeds between two businesses. If I just pay attention to what’s around me I find places like this.

  • Peony

    Waited two days for the weather to get a bit warmer so this flower would open a little. It had shut tightly Friday as the weather chilled. Welcome to New England, peony.

  • Spirea

    I first saw these bushes growing wildly last year outside the front door of the converted factory where I live. They look like they’re a gift from a passing alien.
